A standing desk is, of course, a desk you stand at to work, rather than sitting down.
I’ve been reading about the health benefits of standing desks, and thinking about switching, for a couple of years.
More recently, a couple of friends have switched, and they like it. And a recent scientific study shows that sitting for long periods is deadly, even if you otherwise get enough exercise.
One friend went for a GeekDesk, an $800 piece of furniture with a motor that raises and lowers the work surface. Another is expecting delivery next week of a Kangaroo adjustable height desktop.
But I did some measurement and discovered to my surprise that the vertical distance between a standing desk and a conventional desk is just 15″. So, with Julie’s help, I located a shelf set which can be laid on its side and laid on top of my existing desk. Voila! Standing desk!
Now to clear off my desk to make room for the shelves. This is a nontrivial process.
(I don’t know why it should have surprised me that the difference between standing and sitting is just 15″. After all, it’s basically the length of your thigh, from knee to hip, right?)

Hmmm… I have boxes that are 15″ high laying around here somewhere.
Also, I have a wireless keyboard, so if I want to cheat later on….

I applaud your use of the standing desk. I am a physical therapist and standing is a great ergonomic alternative to sitting all day. Make sure that you have a footrest under the standing desk and a stool to sit on if you get tired. Standing all day is not healthy either. I work in a school setting and standing desks are becoming very popular in the educational environment. My company, Classroom Seating Solutions, makes Standing Desk Conversion Kits. These kits contain long legs and a FootFidget footrest which can be put on a standard classroom desk to make a economincal standing desk. The students love to stand and it helps them focus, burn calories, and it’s more comfortable than sitting. Thanks for helping to spread the work about the benefits of standing.
