I have a new favorite iPhone app. It’s called Due, and it lets you easily set up timers and reminders that set off alarms on the iPhone. You can set up a timer to go off in five minutes when your tea is done brewing, or a half-hour before your next meeting. I use it to make sure I don’t go on Facebook and Twitter too frequently; I limit myself to one pass every three hours (yes, I know how pathetic and addictive that is). I also set a timer to go off one hour after I’ve eaten breakfasts or lunch, to remind me to go out and exercise.
The iPhone has a built-in timer and alarm app, but it only supports one alarm and one timer at a time. With Due, you can set multiple alarms and timers, and have each one post a different reminder message when it goes off, like “tea’s ready” or “time to exercise.”
It makes a pleasant clicking sound when you tap keys to set an alarm, and the list of alarms has a column of lightswitches which you can tap to activate and de-activate alarms.
My only complaint about it is that the alarm sound (which sounds like an old-time alarm clock) is a bit faint. It won’t wake you up or really grab your attention. However, it’s perfect for when your real motivation is to time events that should happen at or later than a certain time. For example, I don’t want to be sure to check Facebook every three hours, I just want to be sure I don’t check it more frequently than every three ours.
Due costs $3.

Pester is a similar app that I use on the Mac, it’s free.
